The scientists capturing the sounds of the ocean - bbc reel

Every year, hundreds of blue whales migrate to Chile’s Corcovado Gulf in search of krill. Now, a team of local scientists are deploying underwater drones, which detect and record the whales’ vocalisations, to help them build a map of where the whales are in real time. The project’s lead scientist, Susannah Buchan, hopes the research could lead to the creation of new marine protected areas and an acoustic alert system.

I made a film about the project for BBC Reel in 2019. Check it out here.
